The end of the school year is always hectic. Finish the year well by protecting energy, closing loops and setting next year up for a smooth start. Here are some practical, time-efficient tips for school leaders:
Lock the schedule
Map the final term on one page—key events, deadlines, owners—and add a clear “stop doing” list. Share it with staff.
Cull meetings
Look for opportunities to replace meetings with a weekly bulletin (what’s on, decisions, deadlines). Keep only brief huddles for urgent issues.
Celebrate specifically
Ask teams for three concrete wins; use these for staff shout-outs and your end-of-year message.
Protect the learning tone
Hold firm on routines to avoid the “last-week slide.” Visible leadership walks help.
Triage workload
Cancel low-impact tasks. Prioritise reporting, class placement, device returns and room pack-down.
Close the data loop
Review attendance, behaviour and achievement snapshots; capture two priorities per year level for next year’s plan.
Communicate clearly with families
Send a parent wrap-up. Key 2026 dates, booklist info, device return, uniform shop hours and first-day procedures.
Care for people
Get out and about. Do five-minute check-ins with staff who’ve had a tough term; offer targeted release or duty swaps where possible.
Keep students safe
Confirm risk assessments for excursions/celebrations and supervision rosters. Leaders need to be active and visible supporting staff too.
Model calm
Work reasonable hours, set email boundaries and share your out-of-office dates early.
End well, start strong!
Clear plan, kind culture, tight comms—and nothing new in the last term unless it’s essential.
