I had an awesome time presenting at the recent PDN conference at Sea World on the Gold Coast. The theme of the conference was Sparking JOY Through Leadership.
I argued that we used to have more FUN working in schools. Much of the FUN has disappeared or been taken away. For example, WH&S, helicopter parents, covering classes and compliance have all contributed to us being crazy busy and sucked away many of the FUN things that we used to enjoy.
Working in schools has always been demanding but when you take away the FUN and pile on the bureaucracy, it’s no wonder we are having staffing issues.
How do we bring the JOY back and build a school culture that values Joy?
I’d suggest thinking about some of the FUN things that you enjoy (or used to enjoy) at school. For example, I love playing handball with the students during a lunch break. YES, I know you are busy but for me playing handball for just 5 minutes was FUN, always led to a laugh and was good for BOTH my physical and mental health.
What activities do you (or did you do) that were FUN?
