Working in schools is challenging and it isn’t unusual for staff to feel less than enthusiastic on Sunday night. Whilst I’m not Pollyanna running around thinking everyone should be feeling passionate and enthusiastic about the week ahead, they should at least feel supported.

School culture is vitally important. Some schools are better places to work in than others. You can feel it within minutes. This is not necessarily just because of the clientele they service or the support they receive from their community but because of the culture that exists.

As Vanderbloemen says,
“Nothing beats culture!
Culture trumps your school programs.
Culture trumps your strategic plan.
Culture even trumps the competency of your team.”

Working in schools is challenging and tough because the work is important. Every day we have the opportunity to change student’s lives.

It is vital that as leaders, we focus on building a culture where staff feel we are in it together and they feel valued and supported.

Schools are people places. Whilst I know you are busy and have lots to do, what actions can you take this week to ensure your staff feel valued and supported?
